Whether you have a trip planned or you simply want to be prepared at home, your choice in a first aid kit bag will make a difference. Though most people don’t realize it, your first aid equipment doesn’t just need to be available, but it needs to stay safe as well. By finding a first aid box that will keep your bandages and other tools sterile and dry, you can increase the lifespan of your first aid supplies, while also keeping them on hand when you need them the most.

For Your Home Kit

If you’re looking for a first aid bag for home, you can be a little more flexible in terms of the size and the shape – so long as you have room. A larger, watertight box is best as it will allow for a number of things to be stored in it, while also giving the tools a safe and dry location. You can find these kinds of boxes at wilderness supply stores in the camping equipment sections or you might also be able to find them through medical supply stores and retailers. In a pinch, an airtight plastic bag or pouch can also work for your home needs.

For Travel

When you are looking for a first aid box for traveling, you need to consider the portability as well as the security of the box itself. If you can’t carry this box easily, chances are good that you won’t carry it at all – and that’s not going to help in a medical emergency. Try to find a smaller box that you can cram only the essentials into; similar to the box you might keep in your home. This way, it can be placed into the top of a hiking pack for easy access without taking up too much room.

Many outdoorsy folks like a more flexible first aid box that’s more like a bag than a sturdy box. Drawstring bags and stuff sacks are a good choice, but if you will want to be certain that your bandages and other dry supplies are protected with a plastic baggie.

For Your Car

If you live in an area with varying weather conditions, your first aid box in your car might require a bit more gear – blankets, extra water, etc. For this kind of kit, you might want to invest in a smaller plastic box that’s not necessarily watertight, but simply large enough to store everything that you need.

No matter what kind of first aid bag you buy, make sure you fill it with the essentials – bandages, antiseptic cleansers, signaling equipment and some food and water. When you need help, you should be ready for anything.

If you don’t know by now, learning CPR first aid is a civic duty for each and every person. As understanding and knowledge has increased, methods of basic first aid and CPR have changed. Now there is a more universal understanding of just how to give first aid and CPR to people suffering from a wide range of illnesses or injuries. Obviously, the process and procedure that are incorporated into CPR and first aid instruction must be simple and memorable enough that they are remembered without too much thought involved.

Each CPR first aid training class will have its own set of offerings. A basic first aid and CPR class will give you the rudimentary skills you will need to treat most minor injuries, including abrasions, burns and bruises. A good CPR and first aid course will teach you the guidelines of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, poison control, how to treat broken bones and choking procedures while you wait for emergency services to arrive. Training courses will also teach other general information you need to know in an emergency situation.

For the smallest members of the community, there is a first aid and CPR course especially for them. There is a CPR first aid training class that focuses on administering care to infants under the age of one year who have sustained an injury or are in need of emergency lifesaving measures. These classes can be particularly useful for new parents or parents who need a refresher course. Additionally, this particular first aid and CPR course is recommended for babysitters as well.

The person conducting the group should not overemphasize his responsibility beyond the scope of his or her abilities or expertise. The duty is to save and stabilize the patient until medical staff arrive or the individual is taken to a medical facility. Get to the wounded individual as quickly as possible. Be cool, swift and meticulous. This should allow you to reduce the discomfort and the distress of the individual. Treating the patient awkwardly will merely make the ultimate recovery harder and occasionally aggravate the condition for which they need attention.

Look for the following when you come upon an injured individual; are they breathing and is there bleeding? Attend to these first, before you begin to treat easily observed injuries. The best advice is to take a CPR first aid course so that you know exactly what you need to do in an emergency situation. The ability to use both CPR and first aid requires the person to be aware of a lot of innovations and also be versatile in order to use the resources available to him or her. Through emergency first aid training, they achieve a level of awareness, education and preparedness that can put them in control should a dire situation arise.

All of us should learn CPR and first aid. These skills are vital and can actually save a life.

In many countries, CPR and first aid training and certification is promoted by the government to assure that each and every citizen has the basic skills to help during an emergency situation. There are different types of health and safety certifications that you can get, involving adult CPR, child CPR, infant CPR, first aid certification and many others. In order to receive one of these certifications, you can attend a basic medical class personally or you can now take them online. These days, taking a first aid or CPR class online is much more practical, as it saves time, is less formal and allows for convenient and fast learning.

When the heart stops beating, a healthy human brain can survive without oxygen for up to four minutes without experiencing any permanent and debilitating damage. It is during those few important moments that cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can provide oxygenated blood to the heart and brain of a victim, thus significantly increasing the odds of survival.

There are many hospitals and clinics that provide CPR and first aid training instruction online on their personal websites to help provide the larger community with the knowledge of emergency medical treatment skills. Be sure that whichever testing center you choose, it is accredited and will give you certification cards within the same day as testing or at least within one week.

As a responsible citizen, parent, friend or family member, you should learn CPR and first aid methods in order to make a difference in situations that call for emergency assistance. It doesn’t take much time to learn the skills and techniques to save a life, and with online classes, even people with a busy schedule can complete the training. The cost of learning first aid and CPR online is minimal or may even be free. If taken seriously, then these skills will enable you to help a person in need, and maybe even save a life.

It’s true that quick and convenient online CPR certification can now be easily obtained on your own time. Learn how to do CPR and first aid, as well as use an automated external defibrillator and get basic life support and advanced cardiac life support certification through online training courses.

Everybody should learn CPR and first aid. Have you always wanted to learn first aid but been unsure of where to start? Click here to learn more about getting a first aid license, along with other important facts.

No one wants to picture themselves in a predicament where they will need a survival kit, but you do need to think about it. If you do not, you never know when something will happen where you wished you had disaster survival kits nearby. That is why you can do these on your own. Here are a few things you should include.

The first thing of survival is that every person needs food and drink. Water is always best. That is why in all the disaster kits you will have food and water. The rule of thumb for this is that you should have enough for three days as far as food and a gallon full of water on hand. Food should be canned so that it is non perishable. You might even want to throw in a can opener or two to be sure that you can open them and do not starve to death.

Battery operated equipment is also good to have around. This includes a radio as that is how the officials get important warnings and directions to individuals before after and during bad times. The other thing that you should have is a cell phone because things that happen quickly need to be warned about to the officials so they can send out warnings. As well as a flashlight if you are asked to seek shelter or go to a meeting place when power is out.

Things to keep warm are always a good idea as well. For instance blankets so that you do not get hypothermia. There should be extra clothing and supplies to practice as much proper hygiene as possible. The warmer you are the less likely you are to be in any serious danger. If you pass out you should have something with you that can help them to identify you. That is how people can check on you. It is a frightening thing but you do have to be prepared for it.

For children, you should have something to keep them calm and content. You will already be under enough stress without adding to it with fussy kids. Pack some playing cards or paper that they can draw on. Something comforting works too. For babies, make sure you pack diapers and formula.

You might not even think about the small things, but pets and infants are the ones you really have to worry about. There are things that they cannot eat and so forth. You might not be thinking about that when the time comes. To help this, you should have the formula, diapers, and wipes on hands for infants and the dog food and cat food on hand for the pets.

You might be trapped so having blankets with you can help you. People get cold fast and when you are in shock that is no fun. You could actually die from that. So, make sure you have those things around. They can be of great need whether you realize that or not.

There are a ton of things that you can add to these kits. You just need to make sure that you will be safe. Now, you cannot remember everything. Though, there are resources out there that can give you a bit more extensive outlook on the things you will need.

Everyone says the world is going to end and it is just a matter of years. How long? No one can say. So, when the disaster hits, government wants you ready. That is the reason why they have released disaster survival kits and disaster survival kit information.

People living in Canada, Alaska, England and other countries subject to very cold climate, frostbites are common occurrences especially for people who, for some reason, are often staying outside in the cold. It can be a very dangerous condition if one is not properly garbed against cold climate.

Frostbites occur when a person is in an extremely cold environment yet clothed insufficiently against the low temperature. It is caused by long exposure to frigid temperature. That is why ears, nose, cheeks, toes and fingers are often the casualties for frostbites because these parts are often exposed. When frostbite sinks in, tissues and cells may be permanently damaged.

According to the information center of the U.S. National Libarary of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health, there are telling symptoms which may indicate the occurrence of frostbites. At its early stages the patient will feel a tingling in the affected area. It will later escalate to stinging which can be very painful. The skin will be red and raw. As the frostbite intensifies, the area will eventually appear pale and white, and cold and hard to touch. The worst cases of frostbites will result to blackened skin.

Frostbite is the damage of the skin and the underlying tissues when subject to extreme cold at a length of time. Worst case frostbites happen when the cold penetrates the body until it reaches the blood vessels, damaging them and in the process blocks the flow of blood in the affected areas. This is the reason for permanent damage caused by frostbites. When this occurs, amputation becomes a necessity because gangrene may develop and harm the rest of the body.

It will be fortunate if the frostbite is only a minor case because the affected area may still have complete recovery. But to a degree this is not a very comforting thought because the process of thawing is very painful. As the frozen tissues thaw and blood begins flowing back into the area, it goes back to the red-raw state of the early stages of frostbite. The patient will feel a tingling that escalates as sensation creeps back in the affected area.

Frostbites should be given immediate and appropriate medical attention in order to prevent formation of gangrene. When blood vessels are frozen and restrict the flow of blood, this may lead to permanent cell damage and eventually the dead tissues or limbs will have to be amputated. Hypothermia is also an expected condition for frostbite patients. Trauma will also have to be attended to. Physical trauma may happen on the affected areas, especially on limbs. Emotional and psychological trauma may also occur if the patient underwent grueling situations out in the cold.

It is always recommended to take precautionary steps than to deal with the processes of curing an affliction. For people who are already accustomed to freezing environments, precautions against frostbites may already be their second nature. For people who are not used to very cold climate, especially travelers, you should have thick mittens(not gloves), hats and scarves, earmuffs, thick and water-resistant clothing.

by Dave Merril

Relation Between Diet and Blood Pressure – If you have Bad eating habits then it contributes significantly to unhealthily high blood pressure levels, even in middle age, when blood pressure levels typically rise as part of the aging process. Whether or not you are taking antihypertensive drugs, the need to make dietary improvements (eg. follow a healthy low-fat diet) is frequently at the top of a doctor’s list of recommendations to reduce or prevent the onset of high blood pressure. Before outlining the best type of diet for hypertension, let’s take a brief look at health consequences of raised blood pressure.

Under-developed countries, some studies show that twenty to forty percent of adults battle persistent problems with high blood pressure. This condition can put a strain on the heart, leading to heart damage. It may also cause coronary artery disease, strokes, failure of the kidney, and eye damage. It is up to you to save the function of vital organs by controlling blood pressure. Hyper tension is known as the “silent killer” – once you realize you have it you may already have damaged organ tissue.

Normal blood pressures for an adult are 120/80 or lower. Once it goes between that and 140/90, the patient is considered “pre-hypertensive”, and over that 140/90 mark the patient is considered fully hypertensive. Both groups (pre and hypertensive) need to make dietary changes, incorporate exercise, and modify lifestyle to help prevent the onset of heart disease.

Overall bodyweight can also impact blood pressure. Those who are overweight experience more incidences of high blood pressure. Simply losing weight can decrease the risk. This needs to be taken seriously; 7 out of 10 adults who are considered obese also suffer from high blood pressure.

A diet, balanced with fruits, vegetables and low fat dairy is a good beginning for weight loss. Include foods that are low in saturated fats. Other good food choices include those with fiber and protein. These essential foods will give your body the fuel it needs for energy. The American Heart Association has specific guidelines for a diet that will help reduce high blood pressure.

Foods with too much sodium will also inflate blood pressure. The salt will force the liquids to be retained in the body, and the overload of volume leads to high blood pressure. Other potential problems are arterioles. This is the system of blood vessels which regulate the pressure and flow of blood. Regular healthy intake of salt is 2,400 mg for the average person.

To decrease sodium, eat fewer processed foods. Sodium occurs naturally in fresh foods, but the quantity is much lower that for processed food (such as canned or frozen dinners). Condiments, such as BBQ, soy, and steak sauces, salt dressings and other are high in sodium. Picked foods, sodas, and instant foods are also high in sodium. Learn to read labels to help you make appropriate food choices.

When buying foods, search out items labeled as “salt free” or low sodium. Ingredient labels that should raise red flags include anything with the word sodium (nitrite, proportionate or sulfate). MSG is another problem, and is often used in food service.

Personal habits will need to be modified. Replace salt with other herbs or spices – chili ginger and lemon are good choices. Leave the salt off the table when eating. Rinse meats before eating, and make your own soups. Less salt in your diet is key to keeping blood pressure in the normal range.

High Blood pressure is the measure of force against arteries. Do you have high blood pressure? Do you know what are common symptoms and signs of high blood pressure? This article will give you comprehensive information about common signs and symptoms of high blood pressure.

While people will sometimes ignore high blood pressure – also called hypertension, many are just unaware of the signs. Even those who have been diagnosed and prescribed medication will often ignore it, with studies showing a 90% non-compliance rate when prescribed medication. Ignoring the signs and symptoms or not taking medication causes serious health risks.

Normal blood pressure is 120/80. If this reading goes above 140/90, then you consider yourself as a hypertensive patient. Between 120 and 140 is a pre hypertensive stage. which can be controlled even by natural measures like exercise, low salt intake, stop smoking, lower cholesterol, eat vegetables etc.

The normal parameters for blood pressure range around 120/80. Once your blood pressure reading goes over 140/90, then doctors consider you a hypertensive patient. Any top reading from 120-140 is considered the beginning stages or high blood pressure. This is still very manageable with a few lifestyle changes to lower the reading.

For those a risky range in blood pressure, it’s important to stop smoking, increase exercise, and change diet. By adding healthy foods and lowering salt intake, combined with exercise, your healthier lifestyle can lower your blood pressure, often without medication.

High blood pressure or hypertension symptoms include headaches, nosebleeds, dizziness, a flushed face and fatigue. Although people with high blood pressure may have many of these symptoms, they occur just as frequently in those with normal blood pressure.

The best way to gauge your blood pressure is to have it measured. There are many places to have this done for no charge. Often drug stores will take your blood pressure with a freestanding tester, or you can visit a fire-hall or ambulance station and have it taken by a paramedic on duty.

If left untreated, high blood pressure will turn into a chronic problem. The risk of hypertension can cause loss of vision, heart failure, strokes and kidney failure.

It is of utmost importance to realize that high blood pressure can be unrecognized for years, causing no symptoms but causing progressive damage to the heart, other organs, and blood vessels. For this reason it is important to make a visit to your doctor each year and have your blood pressure checked.

Been proficient at first aid is something that is important for all of us. Whether we are members of sports organisations, nominated first aiders at work, or are youth leaders where a knowledge of first aid is demanded, or merely want the skills should they be required, there are plenty of places to learn them. St Johns Ambulance and the British Red Cross run first aid training courses, often providing instruction for various organisations. Also there are several private agencies that provide first aid training for those eager to learn the skills. But before signing up for one of them, it is important to know what to look for in a first aid training course and how it will meet your personal requirements.

There are many agencies offering first aid courses, and they sometimes run them for other organisations. These include St John Ambulance, the Red Cross as well as various private bodies. Some youth groups also teach their members first aid. But whatever first aid course you choose to enrol on will depend on the the level of expertise you are seeking to acquire, plus any specialist knowledge you may require. Most first aid training course providers hold a basic first aid course to give you a grounding in the subject. These can be developed further with a standard first aid certificate.

For the nominated first aider at work, there are also specialist courses available to teach you the practical and theoretical first aid skills needed in the workplace.

Other courses on offer include practical life saving courses that enables first aiders to practice what they have learned. The emergency life saving course teaches first aiders to deal with life threatening cases such as shock and loss of blood, and also enables them learn resuscitation techniques.

Some organisations also provide much more specialist first aid courses. Outdoor instructors, teachers, field scientists, expeditionary may require training in outdoor settings. These are often organised at remote locations such as mountain, adventure and water centres. The training is geared towards injuries that may occur when engaging in such activities.

No matter what your competence is as first aider, your skills will need to be regularly brushed up. So when signing up for a first aid course it is important to ascertain if there will be regular refresher sessions.

Knowing what to look for in a first aid course is important to the first aider, so decide if you just want to learn basic skills or progress to more specialised first aid. There is no shortage of first aid training available, so check with the providers to find out just what is on offer.

Heart attack, called myocardial infarctions in the medical community, have become a leading cause of death in America. Heart attacks are caused when there is damage to the heart muscle and it isn?t receiving enough oxygen. Cardiac problems happen when there is either damage or blockage to the artery to or from the heart. The arteries have the job of taking purified blood to the rest of the body from the heart, and a heart attack occurs when something is in the way.

Signals that are common to heart attacks include a pressure, pain or tightness in the chest. The patient may also experience sweating, nausea and/or vomiting. There may also be a pain that radiates? from the chest to the left arm, and shortness of breath.

If someone, including yourself, begins to experience any of these symptoms, get to the emergency room right away. Call 911 or another number to connect you with a cardiac care ambulance for transport so that care can begin right away. You may also want to give the patient a sorbitrate to put under the tongue, or have them chew on an aspirin. Once the patient is in the hospital, the team may implement rapid thrombolysis, cardiac catheters or angioplasty. There will also be anti-clot medication administration via IV.

The risk factors for heart attacks can be smoking, family history, diabetes, increased cholesterol, obesity, diet, hypertension and antherosclerosis. Finding the controllable factors and changing your lifestyle can help prevent heart attacks.

The risk factors for a heart attack include: smoking, diabetes, high levels of cholesterol, hypertension, history of heart diseases, atherosclerosis, lack of exercise, obesity, and fast foods.

Meditation is a practice that will also help you live a healthy lifestyle. By incorporating relaxation and breathing techniques into your life you can lower your stress level. In spite of making lifestyle changes, you will still need to follow up with your doctor in order to be evaluated for your heart?s condition. This is one of the best ways to make sure you are healthy, and to get advise for how much you need to do.

A killer disease, according to the American Heart Association approximately 58.8 million people in the US suffer from heart diseases. And, about 950,000 Americans die of heart ailments each year. Heart diseases and death from it can be prevented by maintaining your health. Find a balance in life between work and other activities, abandon the couch for the outdoors, don’t watch sports on television play sports instead and you can hope to live a long and fulfilled life.

Life seems to be so unpredictable these days and you never know when you could find yourself in a threatening situation. Almost all of us live in areas prone to extreme weather conditions, and even a simple trip outdoors in very inclement conditions can become a potentially life-challenging situation. Given the relatively low cost and high level of protection provided, every family should consider having an emergency survival blanket available for each member of their household.

The United States space agency, NASA, first developed the concept of a thermal blanket in 1963. We’ve come a long way since then, and these blankets are now used for a variety of common situations, in addition to their primary role as a backup in case of emergency.

An emergency survival blanket is very lightweight, coming in at only 1/2 ounces, and can be carried with you at all times with no effort. The primary role of the blanket is to reflect your own body heat back towards you. If you are adventurous and like to trek off into the wilderness, camping in national parks or taking hiking expeditions, you should ensure that you have an emergency blanket with you all the time.

An emergency survival blanket is made from aluminized non-stretchy polyester and will stay flexible in temperatures below freezing. The blanket is particularly good at retaining body heat, keeping out wind and repelling water. As hypothermia can be a quick killer, you will want to be sure that your internal body temperature remains at the correct level if you find yourself in an emergency situation.

If you like to go camping, you should know that you can use an emergency survival blanket on your next trip. For example, you could put the blanket on the floor to act as a base before you set up camp. Also, you can wrap yourself in the blanket when you go to sleep, and this will give you protection should any potentially adverse conditions or problems arise as you sleep.

Space is always an issue if you travel, and one of the beauties of an emergency survival blanket is that it takes up a very small amount of space. The blanket can be packed very tightly and can be stored quite easily in your backpack. You should also know that these blankets come in a variety of sizes and you can even get blankets which are made for use by two people.

If you are watching the scene of an unfolding breaking news story on the television, you’ll often see medical personnel handing out emergency survival blankets to victims of an accident or other trauma. The blanket is very highly effective in containing body heat, keeping somebody dry and out of the wind, which can also sap your body heat.

An emergency survival blanket has many great features. In addition to being reusable, compact, weather proof, comfortable and flexible, they could just save your life. Make sure that you carry one for every member of your family.
