Common Ant Classes
Ants can be found all over the world, in any country, at any climate condition. We can find them in our landscapes, in our homes, & even in our workplaces. Ants live in colonies, & a single colony may have over a million ants. There are several different ant species. Some of the better-known varieties are the army ants, driver ants, honeypot ants, weaver ants, leaf cutter ants, fire ants, silver ants, & bulldog ants. Each ant colonies are comprised of three classes of ants, specifically the worker ants, the soldier ants, and the single queen ant.
Ants are of different types & are 1 of the most common creatures in the world. Regardless of their tiny appearance, they may pose a threat to humans as well as animals.
Ant behavior may be different according to their class. Ants’ color may vary from red to brown or black and their size vary from two to 25mm.
Army ants & driver ants are highly evolved ants. Army ants are found in South America & driver ants are found in Africa. Unlike other species, these don’t have permanent nests. These colonies reproduce via two methods – nuptial flights or fission.
Weaver ants, on the other hand, are those that build their nests in trees by attaching leaves together. These creatures first force the leaves together with a bridge of workers & then they sew the leaves by pressing silk producing larvae on the leaves.
Honeypot ants generally have enlarged abdomens. They usually live in hot, dry places such as Australia, Africa, North America and they can be found in deserts as well. In some places, these ants are considered a great delicacy.
Leaf cutter ants feed only on fungus and live only within their colony. These ants come in various sized castes to carry out various duties that are to be performed in the colony.
Ants that have a sac of poison are known as the fire ant. Their “poison” is known as piperidine alkaloids.
Lastly, one of the biggest & most primitive varieties of ants are the Australian bulldog ants. They have only one chromosome.
