Basic First Aid

Allergies are a miserable thing to live with, both for me and for my husband. Oh, he doesn’t have allergies, but I think it’s harder for him to see me sneezing all the time,every waking hour. Then a friend told us about wall mount air conditioners. He thought that they may be good for us and our horrible situation.

He was so right!

Well, what is all of the excitement about wall mount air conditioners anyway? To start, they use considerably less energy than the everyday air conditioner. As with any air conditioner, they do an excellent job of cleaning the pollen and dust out of the air. Along with that, they are much quieter than both central air and window or portable air conditioners.

We bought three units. The part installed in the house is about the size of a long and narrow pillow, and hangs on the wall (hence the name “wall mount air conditioner”, sometimes also called “ductless air conditioner” or “split units”) at a little higher than picture level. We live in a long ranch-style home so we placed the two larger units at either end of the home, and the third smaller unit we placed in the inside bedroom.

Some people get concerned about installation. Let me assure you the installation is really simple. It’s just a matter of drilling a three inch hole in the wall, installing the inside unit on the wall with a few screws. Then put the outside unit on a cement pad. After that, connect them together and hook up the power. Oh yes, one final thing the battery needs to be put in the programmable remote. Then you’re up and running, it’s genius!

What we did in our situation was to use two outside units and three inside units. The outside units are essentially heat pumps that pull the cool out of the summer air and bring it in the house, and in the winter extract the warmth from the outside air and bring it inside. Simple heat pump technology.

These quietly operating units have solved the pollen and dust problem. In a couple of days I quit sneezing so my husband is happier also.

What is extra nice about these wall mount air conditioners is that they work in the winter as a heat source. Who wouldn’t like a little extra heat these days, from an energy-efficient source? No need to add ducts or blowers, the units work to provide a little extra warmth without sabotaging your utility budget. No wood to chop, no fuel oil, no pellets, this is worry-free and easy!

On top of all of these benefits, the federal government is offering a tax credit to folks who make the effort to put in this type of efficient heating and cooling source. Guess what, many wall mount air conditioners qualify, just take the time to make sure before you make your purchase. What could be better, the government is picking up a considerable portion of the expense and you get to save money in the future?

We couldn’t be more pleased with wall mount air conditioners. I could even go so far as to say that they have saved our marriage. Life is so much more pleasant now. Saving money, not sneezing, and a tax credit, this is great!
