Rashes by poison ivy generally happen in the spring or fall. Poison Ivy rash is caused when people touch the poison ivy or similar plant species.

Poison Oak is found only in the following states which are California, Neveda, Oregon and Washington. Poison Sumac also has a wide distribution. It is found in Texas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Louisiana, Kentucky, Tennessee and the rest of the eastern US states.

A maple leaf shape is a characteristic of the poison ivy plant. Poison Oak has a display of red or green leafs with a shiny look. This species of plant is a relative of Poison Ivy.

The simplest plant to identify is Poison Sumac. This plant has reddish or grayish tips. 7 to 13 tips are within each stem.

Poison Ivy is not contagious. The way to get Poison Ivy, Poison Oak, or Poison Sumac is to touch the plants. Some people are immune to Poison Ivy but many people are not. Also, people that are immune to Poison Ivy may not be immune a year from now.

To prevent poison ivy plant from touching you, it is a good idea to wear long pants and long t-shirts. Be sure to know how the poison ivy plant looks so it can be avoided. Certain individuals can catch poison ivy very easily. They may have touched the plant for one second and a rash develops. Other people do need some prolonged contact exposure to poison ivy before a rash develops.

Wash your hands with soap and water, if you touch the poison ivy plant. If your skin breaks out, use poison ivy lotion on your skin. This will prevent itches and also stop infections from spreading.

Poison Ivy Pills should be taken at the start of a Poison Ivy breakout. These pills should be used once a hour during the start of the poison ivy breakout. As the poison ivy goes away, you can decrease the dosage of the pills to every three or 4 hours. As the poison ivy rash subsides, you can reduce the dosage even more.

Poison Ivy pills can help stop poison ivy breakouts. This medicine gives you a little more defense against poison ivy. The poison ivy rash may not be as severe if the poison ivy pills are used.
